Who remembers being told not to go out in the cold with wet hair because you’ll catch a cold, or worse yet, pneumonia? This is actually a common myth, as you get sick due to a myriad of viruses which you can come into contact with regardless of the outside temperature!
But we’re not advocating that people go outside with wet hair! Just because you may not get a cold doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. The truth is, our hair needs water because it’s a necessary moisturizer. It holds the water in and can freeze when wet and break off if the temperature is low enough!
Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, author of Hair Care Rehab, explains it simply by saying, “if your hair freezes it becomes less pliable and is certainly more vulnerable to breakage.” So our advice for winter healthy hair: skip leaving the house with wet hair! If you have no other option and must leave with wet hair, wear a hat or silk scarf. It will help keep the moisture in!
