The sun, saltwater, and chlorine are all key components of a summer day… and are all known to damage and dry out hair, making it feel fried and dead. Keeping your hair from becoming damaged in the blazing heat of the summer can feel like a lost cause;luckily, we have a few tips you can follow to keep your hair manageable, healthy, and beautiful!
Take a Break from the Heat:
Cover your hair with a hat before spending a long day in the sun. Not only will this prevent damage and the drying out of your hair by the sun, but it will also provide extra UV protection, and ensure your scalp retains moisture.
Lay off the blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. These heating tools do extensive damage to hair, especially during the summer, when you are already prone to dryness from the sun. Instead, try a heatless hairstyle, like a messy bun or loose braid! Keeping your hair loose and natural is great for keeping your hair under control and minimizing sun damage.
Protect your Hair from Chlorine Damage:
Try putting leave in conditioner or clean water (as simple as rinsing with tap water!) into your hair before taking a dip in the pool this summer. Doing this will not only prevent hair from absorbing as much chlorine, but it ensures it will not turn a greenish hue from too much chlorine exposure!
Once you get out of the pool, rinsing hair with apple cider vinegar (¼ cup) and water (2 cups) will limit further chlorine damage. You could try this technique before getting into the pool as well.
Moisturize:
It is normal to wash your hair more often in the summer due to the sweat produced thanks to all the heat, leaving you feeling like you need a shower. Switch to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and implement a natural deep conditioning treatment into your routine once a week can help to get extra moisture into your hair.
Coconut oil and shea butter also go a long way. Put a small amount of this into your hair following a wash to help to moisturize, de-frizz, and smooth your hair. Olive and avocado oils are also good at penetrating hair, leaving it moisturized, not greasy. Work in these oils after shampooing from the ends to the roots, then rinse normally.
