Do You Lose More Hair in the Summer Months?
During the summer months, there are a lot more environmental factors that can damage your hair like sun rays and humidity. So the question everyone wants to know is, can these factors cause you to lose more hair?
Summertime hair loss is a real problem. So if you are thinking you are losing more hair during these hot months, you’re not wrong. Studies have shown that you have a higher rate of telogen hairs (resting hairs) in the summertime, leading to more frequent shedding.
But it is still unclear why this happens. One study showed an association with temperature. Some have speculated that it might be due to the UV light that is causing you to lose more hair, but more research needs to be done to confirm what exactly is the cause.
People who have more fine and delicate hair are more susceptible to increased hair loss. What’s important to note is that you need to define if the hair loss is coming from your scalp or hair breakage.
How can I prevent hair loss during the summer?
If you are willing to put in the extra effort, there are a number of ways to prevent hair loss.
- Eat more protein or take a supplement religiously, like Biotin
- Protect your hair when you are out in the sun from UV Rays with a hat
- Keep your hair moisturized! Consider using a sulfate-free shampoo, which is less likely to strip the moisture from your hair
- Condition!! It helps reduce breakage
- Be gentle on your strands
- Minimize heat when you can – either try not to use it at all or consider lowering the heat setting on your hot tools
- Try a microfiber towel to pre-dry your hair before blow drying to reduce drying time
- Avoid tight hairstyles!
What products should I use during the summer?
As stated above, a sulfate-free shampoo is a smarter choice because it doesn’t dry out your hair as much. Also, make sure you are buying shampoo and conditioners that are specifically created to restore moisture. Your hair is being dried out all summer long from the scorching sun, chlorine filled pools, and humid weather conditions, so using moisturizing shampoo and conditioner in the summer months is crucial.
Hair Masks. Hair masks are your best friend all year round, but especially more in the summer. Try finding a strengthening or repair hair mask that you can use once or twice a week to give your hair that extra strength.
Always make sure you are using a heat protectant prior to using heat on your hair. There are leave-in hair treatments that also provide heat protection so you can easily put it in your hair after you get out of the shower and before styling and blow drying.
For scalp care, try finding a scalp scrub, serum, or cleanser. This will help stimulate the scalp’s blood flow for healthy hair follicles.
Treating hair loss will differ based on your situation and what measurements you take in fixing the issue. Just remember that hair shedding is completely normal. Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is common, but if you are losing more hair or are noticing hair loss in a pattern, its worth seeing a dermatologist to look for causes.
