Has your hair become noticeably more frizzy lately? It’s likely because of all the humidity we’ve seen. But don’t worry we are here to help!
Your hair is intricate because it is made up of three layers and thousands of cells. The reason frizz occurs is because the outer layer of your hair, also known as the cuticle, often rises up. Think of this outer layer as a shingled roof. When your hair is smooth the shingles lie flat, but when you brush through your dry or curly hair the shingles tend to lift. If your hair is drier in texture you are more likely to have frizzy hair, especially on humid days because your hair absorbs moisture in the air causing those “shingles” to rise.
To combat frizzy hair here is what you can do…
- Don’t brush your hair when it’s dry!
Brushing dry hair can stretch and damage your hair causing it to break. After a shower, towel-dry your hair and while it’s still wet either brush, comb, or run your fingers through it.
- What to do when your hair is no longer wet? Comb dry hair with wet fingers!
By wetting your hands with water and then finger-combing through your hair you are taming the frizz while also reducing the tangles.
- Put moisture back into your hair!
The people with frizzy hair often tend to have drier hair so it is important to put moisture back into it. This can be done by using conditioner, a frizz cream, or a natural oil.
- Minimize the use of heat products!
Straighteners, curling irons, and hair dryers can damage the hair at a faster rate so it is important to go easy on these products. If you still wish to use a blow dryer make sure you buy one with a diffuser and only blow dry the roots of your hair.
